Prof Simon Wilmot received Yash Chopra SSCAFF Award 2018 for his ‘Contribution to Film & Arts in Multicultural Australia’, from MP Inga Peulich, Ms Rosaria Zarro and Retired Brigadier Mr V.K.Atre (Indian Army) on the Closing Day of SSCAFF 2018: Arts & Film Festival held in Deakin University, Burwood Campus 3125.
SSCAFF 2018 - Satrangi 7 Colors Arts & Film Festival (23rd-29th June) is an Indigenous, Indian & Cross-Cultural festival of performing arts and creative arts in Australia which include 7 Arts - Film, Fashion, Music, Dance, Locations, Literature & Instruments from all Acting, Performances, Comedy, Drama Schools, Clubs, Artists and Community organizations to showcase their extraordinary talent to the public while encouraging the participation of the whole community in celebrating and valuing cultural diversity via promoting multiculturalism.
Yash Chopra SSCAFF Community Awards were introduced in SSCAFF 2017 to recognise those who use outside-the-box thinking to promote multiculturalism and contribute to social cohesion by sharing a culture's message to an outside audience through any form of arts, cultural and community input, fostering cross-cultural understanding, celebrate and preserve the diversity of cultures that make Australian/Victoria such a great place to live.
Simon Wilmot presently is employed as Associate Head of School (Partnerships and International), School of Communications and Creative Arts, Faculty of Arts and Education, Deakin University in Melbourne 3125.
Simon Wilmot has been teaching film at Deakin University since 1990. He has played a key role in course and curriculum development, including the introduction of digital technologies, the development of industry partnerships, international partnerships and study abroad and study tour opportunities for Deakin film students. Simon has been a member of the selection committee of the documentary section of Melbourne International Film Festival, a judge of the Australian television industry Logie Awards and the ATOM Awards Executive Officer from 2009 to 2012.
Simon’s research interests is in documentary as an ideological practice and how it relates to other social practices that shape individual and group identity. He has made films in Africa, India, Malaysia, Laos and Australia. His most recent film, The Last Days of Sunlight, tells the story of the struggles of Lamalama elder Sunlight Bassini in regaining ownership of his community’s lands on East cape York.
SSCAFF festival was started on the first passing anniversary of Late Yash ji (Filmmaker Yash Raj Chopra) in October 2013 with a One Hour program, which in 2018 has grown to a One Week long presentation including Indigenous, Indian & Multi-Cultural artists, performers and filmmakers at 6 locations.
In this 6th consecutive Year of SSCAFF, SKGA presented more than 100 performers, 10 films, 3 SSCAFF Awards, held One Film Panel discussion and promoted 7 Arts due to the help of dozens of volunteers. and recorded attendance of 1000 plus people including 6 MP, Mayors, VMC Councillors, and participation from following countries and cultures: Indian, Greek, Samoan, Mauritius, Afghan, German, Filipino, Indigenous Australian, Pakistani, Italian, French, Bangladeshi, Netherlands, Sudanese, Cambodian, Israel, Croatian, Egyptian and Srilankan communities.
