The São Paulo Pass is considered the "smashiest" of all smash passes by many. This closed guard pass has applications in MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, BJJ, grappling, grapplearts, at any belt level of BJJ training or tournament competition. Black to White. Leo famously implemented the São Paulo Pass in his victorious fight for the 2011 superheavyweight world title against BJJ great Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida. Leo holds victories over a long list of top-tier BJJ competitors such as Keenan Cornelius, Xande Ribeiro, and Gabriel Vella, just to name a few.

In addition to his São Paulo passing system, Leo is known as an extremely versatile technician with an encyclopedic knowledge of a wide range of techniques.

Leonardo Nogueira is a black belt under Fabio Gurgel. He is my instructor and the head instructor at Alliance Atlanta. Leo won his first World Championship as a Blue Belt in 2006. He won four additional world titles and continues to dominate in competitions. He won the prestigious European, Brazilian, and Pan American championships as well. His extensive list of medals put him on a level of Jiu-Jitsu few have reached. Leo’s teaching style enforces Master Jacare’s methods of proper technique in his classes and teaches a style of Jiu-Jitsu that is practical in competition and in self-defense.
