A hormone produced by the pituitary gland, a small gland at the base of the brain, is prolactin. Breasts grow and produce milk when prolactin is present during pregnancy and after delivery. In pregnant women and new mothers, there is normally a high level of prolactin in the blood. For women and men who are not pregnant, levels are typically low. Excess prolactin can cause the production of breast milk in men and in women who are not pregnant or breastfeeding. In women, too much prolactin can also cause menstrual problems and infertility (the inability to get pregnant).
