While the debate on education in Pakistan is currently focused on the quality and universal application of the Single National Curriculum, 20 million children in Pakistan either receive no education at all or only a partial education. Tabadlab is hosting a policy roundtable reflecting on the decade since the ‘education emergency’ became a buzzword, and the steps that can be taken to make access to quality education more equitable. According to the Pak Alliance for Math & Science Study on Out of School Children, each region within Pakistan reports different reasons for why children are not enrolled or drop out, among which are rising opportunity costs for parents, and inadequate access to secondary schools. What should worry policymakers and educationists, even more, is that out-of-school children who have never been enrolled in schools have shown no percentage increase in a decade. How can educationists, civil society, and the private and public sectors align to tackle the problem of out-of-school children?
