Take a road trip with us to see spectacular Quilotoa crater, the westernmost volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes. The crater is definitely the star of the show, but just as impressive are views along the way. Coming from Quito, we also saw the Cotopaxi volcano during our drive, and were treated to amazing views of the still-active volcano on drive back. As you get closer to Quilotoa, the views of canyons, valleys, crags, and gullies provide a panorama that you will want to stop and take in, over and over. And watch for llamas, alpacas, and sheep as you pass through the villages and farms on your way there. Once you reach the summit and park at the crater, you’ll find restaurants, hostels, and tiendas selling alpaca wool clothing items and souvenirs. The architecture of the buildings there are uniquely Quilotoa, and fascinating.Once you’re there: You can hike around the caldera in four to five hours, or you can hike from the view point, down to the water in about half an hour, with the hike back up taking 1-2 hours (or ride a mule back up!) We chose to simply stand in awe, from the viewpoint, and enjoy the breathtaking views. It was a very windy day, and the shadows from the fast-moving clouds were ever-changing and mesmerizing. If you go, be prepared for a variety of weather conditions. We wore heavy jackets, hats, scarves and gloves that day due to the wind. And don’t forget appropriate footwear, water and sunscreen! About Quilotoa: It last erupted about 200 years ago, and is still somewhat active with thermal activity in the water. It’s elevation is 3,914 m (12,841 ft) and is estimated to be 40,000 years old. The lake is 250 m (820 ft) deep. It’s located in Pujilí Canton, Cotopaxi Province in the Andes range of Ecuador. About Cotopaxi Volcano: One of the highest active volcanoes in the world with an elevation of 5,897 m (19,347 ft.) Located in Latacunga canton of Cotopaxi Province, about 50 km (31 mi) south of Quito. If you’re new to our channel please see our intro video here: • Explore Ecuador | Channel Introduction www.ExploreEcuador.net
