Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled cameras are helping save the lives of elephants around Rourkela in Sundargarh district, Odisha by detecting their movements near railway tracks and alerting authorities in time. These systems — installed at four key locations in the Rourkela forest area — have detected a total of 880 elephant track crossings and helped prevent animal deaths on train lines.

Officials say that within the past year, the use of AI-based surveillance has saved as many as 270 elephants from fatal train collisions, by issuing alerts when herds approach rail routes which frequently see goods trains.

Forest Department teams — including the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) in Rourkela, Jasobant Sethi — and representatives such as Pavan Tiwari have held detailed discussions on expanding and improving the technology’s usage to further protect wildlife.
