abu naeem mohammad munir chowdhury (27 november 1925 – 14 december 1971) was a bangladeshi educationist, playwright, literary critic, linguist, orgmic and intellectual. he was one of the victims of the killing of bangladeshi intellectuals by the pakistani military during the bangladesh war of independence in 1971. he was born in manikganj in the then dhaka district. his ancestral residence is in gopairbagh village under chatkhil thana in noakhali district. he was the second of fourteen children of khan bahadur abdul halim chowdhury, a district magistrate of the english era. kabir chowdhury is his elder, ferdousi majumdar is his anuja. he got married to lily chowdhury in 1949.
student life
munir chowdhury passed the matriculation examination in the first division from dhaka collegiate school (now dhaka college)in 1941 and passed the isc in the second division from aligarh muslim university in 1943. he then passed honours (1946) and masters (1947) in english from dhaka university, both in second grade. he was a resident student of salimullah hall. in the first year of his student career at the university, in 1943, he won the provost's cup as the best speaker in the hall.
nikhil won the highest number of awards in the bengal literature competition in 1946. as a student, he wrote a math drama on the king's birthday, which was staged by the student parliament. as soon as he entered the university, munir chowdhury got involved in left-wing politics, disrupting the results of his examinations. he was expelled from salimullah hall for his excessive involvement in left-wing politics. for the same reason, he was also deprived of his father's financial assistance. at that time, he used to earn by writing plays for the dhaka radio centre. he spoke at the first student meeting held on the campus of dhaka university on december 6, 1947 demanding that bengali language be one of the national languages of pakistan. soon after partition in 1947, a regional committee was formed under the bengali provincial committee of the communist party of india to conduct operations in east bengal (newly formed east pakistan). munir chowdhury was one of the seven members of this zonal committee. munir chowdhury joined the second congress of the communist party of india in march 1948. later in the same year, pragati was elected secretary of the writers association. teaching phase
in 1949, munir chowdhury joined brajlal college in khulna as a professor of english. he also studied bengali there for a few days. in march that year, he came to dhaka and was arrested for political activities, but was released on the promise of not doing politics. the same year he married lily mirza. he joined jagannath college in dhaka in 1950 and was appointed as a temporary lecturer in english in august that year. but couldn't stay far away from politics. on february 21, 1952, he was hit by the police while entering the university. on february 26, teachers were arrested and fired for calling a protest meeting. at that time, for nearly two years, he lived in dinajpur and dhaka jails. on february 21, 1953, in captivity, kabar wrote an ankaika for the performance of the prisoners. in 1953, left-wing ranesh dasgupta requested munir chowdhury to write a play to celebrate february 21 in jail. based on this request, he wrote the play. [3] the play is known as its best play and was first staged inside the prison, in which prisoners played different roles.
he received lessons in ancient and medieval bengali literature from fellow imprisoned professor ajit guha, took the primary ma examination in bengali in 1953 from prison and was ranked first in the first class.
he was released from prison in 1954 when the united front government came to power in east pakistan. in 1954, while in security captivity, he passed his master's degree in bengal with a final ma exam.
political life
munir chowdhury was actively participated in the language movement in 1952 and was captured by the government of pakistan. while in captivity, he wrote his famous play grave (1953). he was vocal against any cultural aggression of the fifties and sixties. in 1966, rabindranath tagore's song campaign on radio and television protested against the pakistani government's ban. in 1968, when the government of pakistan took the initiative to reform the bengali alphabet with the roman alphabet, he protested against it. in 1971, during the non-cooperation movement, he boycotted the title of sitara-e-imtiaz in support of the movement.
