Nineteen years after his passing, the voice of Sheikh Abdullateef Maikabara, a highly referred Islamic scholar, continues to echo through Islamic scholarship and education in Nigeria.
The Maikabara community marked the 19th remembrance of the renowned Islamic scholar with a series of lectures.
The event took place on February 1 at the Maikabara Community Islamic Centre, bringing together Islamic scholars, students, and community elders to reflect on the life and enduring legacy of the late cleric, who passed away in February 2007.
Dr. Mahmood Dan Jumah, delivered the keynote titled “Learning Arabic in Nigeria: A Case Study of Ilorin,” and emphasized that Arabic remains central to understanding Islamic texts and teachings.
He described the language as a vital tool for accurate comprehension of the Qur’an and Hadith.
In an interview with our reporter, Mallam Abdulrasheed described the lifetime of the late cleric as “more than just a scholar”.
He noted that Sheikh Abdullateef was a father figure, a writer, and a role model whose humility and dedication inspired many students who later became academics and community leaders.

Other scholars, including Dr. Abdulfatai Olanru and Dr. Muhammad Jamiu Asalejo, also delivered lectures at the event.
A panel discussion followed, where participants examined the role of Arabic in modern Islamic education and called for stronger curricula, improved teaching
methods, and community-driven initiatives to promote Arabic literacy across Nigeria.
The programme also featured Qur’anic recitations, poetry, and the presentation of awards to individuals sustaining Sheikh Abdullateef Maikabara’s legacy of Islamic scholarship and community service.
