In this study of Mark 7:1–23, we dive into a high-stakes theological showdown between Jesus and the religious leaders of His day. While the Pharisees focus on the "tradition of the elders" and external washings, Jesus exposes the danger of "empty religion"—where hearts are far from God even while lips are speaking His name.
In This Video, We Explore:
The Conflict (7:1–5): Why were the Pharisees so upset about the disciples' unwashed hands? We break down the difference between the Written Torah (613 Commandments) and the Oral Law (Human Traditions).
The Critique (7:6–13): Jesus quotes the Prophet Isaiah to expose hypocrisy. We look at the "Corban" loophole—a religious legal trick used to avoid moral responsibility—and how we might be using "religious busyness" to avoid loving our own families today.
The Revelation (7:14–23): Jesus redefines purity. It’s not what goes into a person that defiles them, but what comes out of the heart. We discuss the "Internal Void" and how we often try to fill it with external pleasures like consumerism, social media, and entertainment.
Key Takeaways:
Tradition vs. Commandment: Tradition is a tool, but when it replaces love and justice, it becomes a distortion.
The Source of Evil: Jesus teaches that the human heart is wounded and needs more than just rules; it needs transforming grace.
The Pleasure Cycle: Why endless pleasure often acts as a cover for spiritual emptiness, and why only communion with God (The Eucharist) can truly satisfy our deepest hunger.
This study has been prepared by Fr. Rolwyn Lobo and the Burning Bush team.
