🚗 1. HOW TO REACH KOTTIYOOR TEMPLE

“Kottiyoor Temple is located in Kannur district, Kerala, and it is surrounded by dense forest and natural beauty. Reaching this place can be an experience in itself!”

🚍 By Bus:
“You can take a bus from Kannur, Thalassery, or Kozhikode to Kelakam or Kudiyeri, which are the nearest towns. From there, jeeps or autos will take you to the temple. Buses may be less frequent during non-festival seasons, so check ahead.”

🚘 By Car:
“If you're coming by car, take the route via Iritty – Kelakam – Kottiyoor. The roads are good, and the drive through the forest is absolutely peaceful and scenic. It’s about 2 to 3 hours from Kannur town.”

🚆 By Train:
“The nearest railway stations are Kannur (around 60 km) and Thalassery. From there, you can hire a cab or take a bus to reach Kottiyoor.”

✈️ By Air (Plane):
“The closest airport is Kannur International Airport, about 60 km away. From the airport, you can reach the temple in under 2 hours by taxi or rental car.”

📖 2. HISTORY OF KOTTIYOOR TEMPLE

“Kottiyoor Temple is steeped in mythology and divine significance. It is believed to be the site of the Daksha Yaga — a tragic event in Hindu mythology.”

“According to the legend, King Daksha conducted a yagna (sacrifice) without inviting his son-in-law Lord Shiva. Out of sorrow and humiliation, Sati Devi, Daksha's daughter and Shiva's consort, sacrificed herself in the fire. In his grief and fury, Shiva arrived here and performed the destructive Tandava. It is believed that this is the exact spot where it happened.”

“There are two temples:

Akkare Kottiyoor – the temporary shrine on the eastern side of the river, open only for a month during the Vaishakha festival (May–June).

Ikkare Kottiyoor – the permanent shrine on the western side, open all year.”

“This is not a grand stone structure. The temple blends into nature — the sanctum is a simple thatched hut, maintaining the purity of the tradition.”

📝 3. POINTS TO REMEMBER WHEN YOU VISIT


✅ Seasonal Opening:
Akkare Kottiyoor is open only for 28 days every year (usually May–June). Plan your trip during this time if you want the full experience.

✅ Dress Code:
Men are required to remove their shirt and wear a white dhoti or mundu. Women are expected to dress modestly, ideally in saree or salwar.

✅ Barefoot Only:
Footwear is not allowed near or inside the temple. Be ready to walk barefoot, including on natural terrain and stones.

✅ No Photography Inside:
Cameras and phones are not allowed inside the sanctum. Respect the spiritual atmosphere.

✅ Holy River Bath:
Devotees take a ritual bath in the river before entering the temple. It’s optional but sacred if you choose to participate.
