Описание: The Philippines is home to more than 110 indigenous groups. Many of them have their own unique language and traditions. They have lived for centuries on different islands in different environments: mountains, forests, plains and coasts. This is reflected in their way of life and culture.
Harvest time is a time for fun. Today we will get to know two indigenous groups from Mindanao: the Mansaka and the Kagan. They're having a gathering in our town.
The Mansaka are the most dominant ethnic group in Compostella Valley. They are said to have lived in the area since Magbabaya.
Their settlements were more often located at the headwaters of rivers.
While the men farmed and tilled the land, the women made clothes from abaca fibers and wove mats. They also helped on the farm during planting, weeding and harvesting.
The Mansaka are known for their skill in jewelry making, weaving bracelets, beads and necklaces.
In their colorful patterns, one can notice many lines, rhombuses, and squares instead of using circles.
The Mansaka believe in the animation of all nature and ancestral spirits.
While the Kagan tribe is mostly Islamic. Compared to the Mansaka, they were more involved in hunting and fishing.
The name "Kagan": derived from the local word "Kaag", meaning "comrade". Another meaning is "inform" or "keep secret". These are the people who bring news and warn neighboring tribes of attacks by other ethnic groups. They live on the coastline and are the first to face any conquests.
Today there is a wide variety of tasty treats on the tables. There are lots of fruits and vegetables. There are gifts of the sea: fish, shrimp oysters and crabs.
Frogs are eaten in different parts of the Philippines, but they are especially popular on the island of Mindanao. They are considered a delicacy and are often served at celebrations.
Coconut worm larvae is also a popular dish in the Philippines. They are a source of protein. The larvae are usually fried, stewed or smoked.
Mansaka and Kagans consider hospitality a sign of respect and friendliness. They greet guests with a smile and hospitality and make them feel at home.
Mansaka and Kagan have always lived in harmony with nature. For them, the forest, river and sea are sacred places, and animals and plants are sacred creatures to be protected.
They try to preserve and pass on traditional languages, dances, songs and crafts to new generations.
