In this video, I demonstrate a low-level pop-up attack in the F/A-18C Hornet, using AUTO-CCIP cluster bomb delivery against a ground target.
This type of attack is used in low-altitude threat environments where it’s not feasible to remain at medium or high altitude and fly long, predictable base-leg or overhead attack patterns. When enemy air defenses, MANPADS, AAA, or radar coverage make high-altitude deliveries too dangerous, staying low and fast becomes the safest option.
By flying terrain-masked at low level, the aircraft minimizes exposure and detection. The pop-up maneuver is then executed only briefly—just long enough to give the weapon system the geometry it needs—before rolling into the attack and releasing in CCIP AUTO. This reduces time exposed to threats while still allowing accurate weapons employment.
Attack Profile Breakdown:
420 knots ground speed on the ingress
30° heading offset to reduce predictability and threat alignment
Pop-up initiated at 4 NM from the target - Kevin Miller recommends 3 NM if you can once proficient.
30° climb to establish attack geometry
15° dive angle for weapon release
AUTO-CCIP mode, allowing the jet to compute and time the release precisely
This profile is particularly effective when:
High-altitude deliveries are denied by air defenses
There is insufficient airspace or time to fly a classic base-leg or wheel pattern
Surprise and short exposure are more important than standoff
For realism and situational awareness:
Tapes ON – HUD and FLIR recorded
ECM set to Semi-Automatic
This run was practiced and refined while flying Raven One: Dominant Fury – Mission 3, created by Baltic Dragon, with techniques inspired by discussions and material from Kevin Miller. Huge respect and thanks to both for their outstanding work and contribution to realistic naval aviation in DCS.
