The Srebrenica Massacre took place on July 11, 1995, during the Bosnian War in the town of Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Srebrenica had been declared a safe area by the United Nations (UN); however, it was attacked and captured by Bosnian Serb forces led by General Ratko Mladić.
Despite being designated as a protected zone by the UN, Bosnian Serb forces, under the command of General Ratko Mladić, overran Srebrenica, resulting in the mass murder of thousands of Bosnian Muslim men and boys.
During the massacre, Bosnian Muslim civilians who had sought refuge in what was considered a safe area were systematically killed. Men and boys were separated, taken to detention camps, and then executed. Women and children were forcibly displaced.
The Srebrenica Massacre is recognized as an act of genocide by the United Nations Security Council. The international community and the UN were widely criticized for their failure to prevent the atrocity despite the town's supposed protected status.
This tragic event stands as one of the darkest chapters in the history of the Bosnian War and serves as a painful reminder of the consequences of the international community's inability to prevent genocide
