The referee: a symbol of authority in any sport and the main arbiter of the rules of the game. Their job is often a thankless one filled with constant pressure, little margin for error, and abuse from players and fans alike. In spite of this, they’re integral to the competitive integrity of sports. At the highest levels of competition, it becomes necessary for an unbiased observer to enforce the rules with the utmost accuracy and professionalism. This reality, of course, is no different in pickleball. From keeping watch for countless different types of faults, to mediating conflict between players, to keeping watch for line calls--referees in pickleball have a lot to juggle simultaneously. But, how does someone even get there in the first place? Well, the road to becoming a pickleball referee is pretty simple on the surface, but it’s nonetheless an arduous one.
