Debra was a 21-year-old constable in 1986 when a car bomb detonated outside Russell Street Police Station in Melbourne. The force of the explosion threw her across the room.
“My initial reaction was ‘I’ve been shot’ because I could not think of anything that could give that force ... to me getting thrown against the wall,” she said.
It was only later that Debra realised it was a bomb, which killed fellow officer Angela Rose Taylor – the first policewoman in Australia to be killed on duty.
To learn more about the dangers cops face on the job – and how the police force is struggling to recruit and retain staff – watch Insight episode Thinning Blue Line on SBS On Demand.
