VA 280 – Advanced Imaging | Course Overview (UFV)
Welcome to VA 280: Advanced Imaging at the University of the Fraser Valley.
In this course overview, I walk you through the foundation, structure, and expectations of VA 280, with a focus on how we’ll merge digital photography with photo editing and manipulation to create photo-based art and media work.
This course builds on prior experience in digital photography. We begin with a short retrospective of VA 180 and MEDA 110 to ensure everyone feels grounded before moving into intermediate-level image manipulation using tools like Lightroom Classic and Adobe Photoshop.
Throughout the course, we’ll explore:
Ways of seeing, composition, and curating moments
Photo manipulation and layered workflows in Photoshop
Media art vs. photo art
Concepts such as triptychs, negative space (Ma), and narrative structure
Creating conceptual, thematic, and personal photo-based work
Using photography and software to produce work suitable for exhibition or media contexts
You’ll learn how images are constructed through layers, selections, masking, blending modes, and compositing—always grounded in photographic intention rather than effects alone. The emphasis is on process, experimentation, and concept, not just technical skill.
This video is meant to orient you, not overwhelm you. You’re encouraged to return to it anytime as a reference point for how the course is structured and what we’re working toward.
Thank you for being here — I’m looking forward to exploring image-making with you this term.
