Mooihoek Farm is a family-run 3rd generation farm located in Hankey within the picturesque Gamtoos Valley of the Eastern Cape (80km from the Gateway City of Port Elizabeth). The farm is managed by Madelé and Johan Ferreira along with an enthusiastic team of leaders.
Madelé Ferreira started in 1998 with 5000 strawberry plants and 5 employees. With the help and support of her husband, Johan Ferreira, Mooihoek currently has 750 000 strawberry plants and 90 permanent employees. They employ an additional 40 – 180 temporary staff during strawberry season.
Mooihoek’s sun-kissed strawberries, all grown in open fields are mostly sold at supermarkets in the Eastern Cape and National. Mooihoek also exports fresh strawberries to Dubai, Bahrain, Doha, and Hong Kong.
Apart from strawberries, Mooihoek produces spinach, kale, and various other crops, depending on the market. Through crop rotation and a strong focus on biological farming practices, they make sure that they put back into the soil, what they take out. All their plants are irrigated by drip, minimizing any water waste.
