In this short video series, Professor Kenneth Smith (University of Liverpool) gives an introduction to some of the themes that feature in his new book, Desire in Chromatic Harmony: A Psychodynamic Exploration of Fin de Siècle Tonality.
In this second video, Kenneth introduces his method of drive analysis, which takes apart the components of complex chord constructions that have multiple dominant seventh 'drives' within them. Kenneth produces a way of plotting these 'drives' on a grid. This method is fully explained in Chapter 4 of Desire in Chromatic Harmony.
