Many of Shakespeare’s witty servants, rustic clowns, and lively banter trace their roots back to Commedia dell’arte, the vibrant, improvisational Italian theatre of the 1500s.
Through figures like Ruzzante (Angelo Beolco), Shakespeare absorbed the raw energy of Italian comic tradition, weaving it into English drama with genius transformations.
Dario Fo, Nobel Prize winner and master of Italian theatre, often highlighted these deep ties — like how A Midsummer Night’s Dream echoes scenes from Ruzzante’s Anconitana.
From the word "zany" (born from "Zanni") to entire characters shaped by the rustic humor of Padua’s stages, Shakespeare's world was richer thanks to Italian comedy.
