ANCIENT ROME RITUALS
Ancient Roman Pagan Music
In ancient Rome, the Parentalia was a nine-day festival held in honour of family ancestors, beginning on 13 February and ended on the 21st with the festivity of Feralia.
Although the Parentalia was a holiday on the roman religious calendar, its observances were mainly domestic and familiar. The importance of the family to the Roman state, however, was expressed by public ceremonies on the opening day, the Idea of February, when a Vestal conducted a rite for the collective di parentes of Rome.
The Parentalia are believed to have been established by Aeneas himself and, for the official part, involve the Vestals, guardians of the sacred fire, who offer sacrifices on behalf of the whole community. During these days, the temples are closed, the sacred fires are extinguished, no marriages can be celebrated, and everyone, even those in public office, must devote themselves to the worship of their dead ancestors.
Lyrics:
"Accipite,o manes, hoc munus,
Quod vobis pio corde offerimus,
Prospere in posterum nos regatis.
Salve dive lar familiaris
Salvete di penates
Salve geni patris familias
Salve vesta mater.
Vos qui gentem ac domum nostram fortiter custoditis
oblationes nostras laeto animo accipite.
Vobis offero puro corde
et vos date familiae nostrae
prosperitatem ac felicitatem in operibus."
