Chinese and Russian Joint Sea Drills 2022 in East China Sea

The drills which started on Wednesday show the increasing cooperation between the two countries to counter U.S. Indo Pacific strategy. The tensions in the region are already on rise as Japan has broken away from its defense only principle and has started developing long range offensive strike capabilities. The recent Joint Sea 2022 military drills are being conducted around the coastline of Zhejiang Province of East China from Zhoushan to Taizhou. The drills will run till 27th December as confirmed by Chinese Ministry of National Defense.

The similar joint naval drills were conducted last year in the waters near Peter the Great Gulf. The naval drills were also carried out earlier in the Yellow Sea. Such drills have become the regular feature of two navies. Chinese Defense analysts believe that these drills will enable two navies to understand each other’s territorial waters, training schemes, and will be helpful to develop joint strategy against the other players in the pacific, specifically USA, Japan, South Korea, and Australia. Earlier this year, the largest ever Chinese Contingent participated in Vostok 2022 strategic drills including the troops from P L A Army, Air Force, Rocket Force and Naval Force. Subsequently, warships of both countries conducted joint naval patrols in the Pacific Ocean. Since last year, two such naval patrols have been conducted so far.

The Joint Sea Drills 2022 are being participated by Chinese warships belonging to Eastern and Northern Theater commands. These including Type 052D destroyer Baotou, Type 052C destroyer Jinan, Type 054A frigates yancheng & Binzhou, and Type 903A comprehensive supply ship Gaoyouhu. In addition, various submarines, early warning aircraft, anti submarine patrol aircraft, helicopters and other assets have also joined the drills. From Russia side, various naval platforms have joined the exercise including guided missile cruiser Varyag, Project 20380 coveettes, Frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov, and various aviation units.

The scheme of drills include joint artillery and rocket fire, anti-submarine operations, mock up missile defense drills, joint blockade, and rescue operations. Such drills were first started in 2012. The present Joint Sea 2022 marks the 10th anniversary of the exercise. Earlier this week, P L A Navy’s most powerful Liaoning Aircraft Carrier battle group accompanied by three Type 055 larger destroyers, and other war ships sailed beyond first island chain in the western pacific. Similarly, various Chinese strategic bombers H-6J have also flew from east china across Miyako Strait into the west pacific. The Japanese maritime self defense forces remained on high alert as the carrier strike group was sailing through the region.
