Using my favorite method for dyeing wool and fiber, this video shows how to dye natural-colored wool yarn a fully exhausted (no leftover dye) solid black. With crockpot dyeing, you can set it and forget it. All you need is time, patience, and basic tools/ingredients to dye a solid black yarn.
As a self-taught indie dyer, black was one of those colors that I struggled with. Either too much dye (waste) or it would come out dark grey - but not black. My goal is to find efficient and easy ways to dye yarn and fiber since I'm a busy mom doing multiple things at once!
Crockpot dyeing allows me to successfully dye yarn and fiber without burning down the house. :)
In the video, I added the weight and size of the yarn I'm dyeing. Every brand of dye will differ, but this should give you a good idea of how much dye to use for 3.7oz of yarn or fiber.
Thanks for watching...more videos about spinning and dyeing coming soon.
About me:
I'm an autodidact: I learn best figuring out how to do things on my own. I was like this in school. Mostly checked out in class (or confused!), then review the material at home and figure out the best way for me to do it. I need space to learn independently to understand what I'm doing.
I started my fiber arts journey with spinning in 2012. My goal was to understand the construction of yarn so that I could be a better knitter. And here I am, with spinning and dyeing being a huge passion of mine.
My goal for these videos is to share my experiences and my methods may or may not resonate with you, but I feel like the next step in my fiber arts journey is sharing my expertise. I hope it inspires others to try a new skill or make it their own.
