Welcome back to Ceramic Shenanigans! Sorry it's been a while, I've been busy with work and experimenting with creating crackle pots!
This crackle texture is made by using a chemical called sodium silicate.
Sodium silicate is the common name for a compound sodium metasilicate, and is also referred to as liquid glass. It's commonly used in ceramics as a deflocculant in slip preparation, when brushed onto pottery on the wheel, it creates a hard layer of clay on the outside while leaving the inside clay moist.
Here I'll show how to use a sodium silicate and water mix to create a crackle effect on your pottery. For my mix, I took a small container and added one part water and one part water. Brush this mix onto your piece and let it sit to dry. You can use heat to dry it quicker, but I find it's better to let it sit and dry naturally to let the clay absorb the sodium silicate mix.
A link to the sodium silicate I used, as well as the b-mix Laguna clay and Amaco velvet underglazes, is down below. If you like the video, please subscribe to see future shenanigans. Thanks!
