There are many common misconceptions about stillbirth and maternal health statistics, and what actually causes babies and mothers to die. In this talk, Professor Joy Lawn FMedSci presents her research on maternal health epidemiology, and how we can improve survival for women and babies during childbirth and in the early days of life. Every year, over 5 million babies worldwide are stillborn or die within 28 days of birth - and often not for the reasons we might think.
Professor Lawn is Professor of Maternal, Reproductive and Child Health Epidemiology at the MARCH Centre, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Professor Lawn gave this presentation '6 million deaths at birth: where, why and how to have happier birth days' as part of the Academy of Medical Sciences New Fellow's Admissions Day 2016, held on 29 June. On this day, the Academy welcomed 47 newly elected Fellows for their formal admission.
