Описание: The apparition of Our Lady of Sion (also known as Our Lady of Zion or the Madonna del Miracolo) is officially approved by the Vatican. 

The apparition occurred on January 20, 1842, in the Church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte in Rome to Marie-Alphonse Ratisbonne, an anti-Catholic Jewish man. 

Official Approval and Recognition

Initial Approval (1842): Following a four-month canonical investigation, Cardinal Patrizi, the Vicar General of Pope Gregory XVI, declared on June 3, 1842, that the event was a "divine miracle".

Papal Support: Pope Gregory XVI personally authorized the formal recognition of the miracle. Later, in 1892, Pope Leo XIII granted the image a Pontifical Coronation due to the numerous miracles reported at the site.

Basilica Status: In 1942, Pope Pius XII elevated the church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte to the rank of a Minor Basilica. 

Context of the Apparition

The Vision: Ratisbonne reported seeing the Virgin Mary exactly as she appeared on the Miraculous Medal, which he had been wearing as a challenge from a friend.

Result: The event led to Ratisbonne's immediate conversion to Catholicism. He later became a priest and, along with his brother Théodore, founded the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion (Notre Dame de Sion), dedicated to the conversion of and witness to the Jewish people. 


The feast day for this apparition is celebrated on January 20.
