This is an example of California ground squirrel pups (juveniles) that are unaware of a hunting rattlesnake in their habitat. The snake is well-hidden in the grass just outside the pups' burrow, which is at the base of an oak tree. The pups emerge from the burrow and explore the area. They make no behavioral indication that they detect the snake. After 28 minutes (about 1 min into this video), the snake strikes a pup, but is apparently unsuccessful (the pup was never found dead nor did the snake search for it after the strike). The pup, aroused by the strike, stands bipedal (on two legs) and alarm calls repeatedly (sorry, no sound!). Alarm calling communicates danger to other squirrels in the area.
Unfortunately, the rattlesnake strike happens so fast that it looks just like a blur. I slowed down the video to 0.25x the original speed, but it still is hard to see. This demonstrates squirrels' amazing ability to rapidly evade strikes.
This footage was used in a study on the development of antisnake defenses in California ground squirrels. Learn more about this research on my blog: www.strikerattleroll.blogspot.com
