French training vessel BELESPOIR sails quietly out of Killeaney Bay at dusk on the 8th August 2013. Lying at anchor off Straw Island was the Irish naval vessel L.E. Ciara.
The Belespoir had spent two days at the harbour in Cill Rónáin where the crew displayed great climbing skills as they tended to the mast and sails. The Belespoir's home port is in Brittany. Built in 1944 in Denmark for transporting lifestock, the Bel Espoir can accomodate a crew of nine and twenty nine trainees. In 1955 it was used as a British sail training vessel and Prince Charles once served on her as a trainee. It was then known as the "Prince Louis 2".
Kilronan is a regular stop for tall ships and the new harbour offers increased shelter for doing minor repairs.
The light of Straw Island lighthouse can be seen bidding a farewll and safe journey to this ship and crew.
