A year ago these Karamojong communities were too weak to dig and water vegetable gardens. TCI brought food relief and training for mind-set change to five villages outside Moroto town. Typically men are not engaged in gardening activities but we have seen tremendous involvement of men, women, youth and children with the result that over 300 gardens have been established in four villages.
The fifth village has no water source. Many people are now gardening instead of charcoal burning and the recovery rate from severe acute malnutrition has improved by 20% over those with no gardens.
Water continues to be a desperate need as we plan to expand the develop the gardening efforts.
