Guillaume d'Aquitaine (also known as William IX of Aquitaine, 1071 - 1126), nicknamed since the 19th century the Troubadour, Count of Poitiers and Duke of Aquitaine. He is also the first known poet in the Occitan language.
He succeeded his father William VIII at the age of 15, which earned him the nickname William the Younger at the start of his reign, which persisted throughout his life. He is also the father of William X and the grandfather of Eleanor of Aquitaine.
He is the oldest medieval poet, since Saint Fortunatus in the 6th century (who resided for a long time at the Sainte-Croix abbey in Poitiers), whose works in the vulgar language, neither sacred nor to the glory of warrior heroes, are preserved. His verses most often deal with women, love and his sexual prowess. Eleven songs are attributed to him. His poetry is sometimes very crude (notably in the suitable song, when he asks his companions which horse he should ride). Considered one of the precursors of courtly love (fin' amor in Occitan), he is one of the influential models of the art of the troubadours, whose poetry will become more gallant.
Performers: Brice Duisit (chant & vièle à archet)
