Rapidly developing weakness or paralysis of the muscles on either the right or left side of the face generally indicates Bell's Palsy. This condition of unknown cause typically stems from swelling of the ganglion cells of the facial nerve within a bony canal located in the skull.
Symptoms of Bell's Palsy include lack of motion of the affected side of the forehead, inability to completely close the eyelids, flattening of the crease between the nose and mouth, drooping of the side of the mouth and weakness of the muscles in front of the neck. Whistling is impossible with Bell's Palsy and food or saliva may dribble from the mouth.
Fortunately most cases of Bell's Palsy begin to resolve within the first month after onset of symptoms. Most cases completely clear by 6-12 months even without any intervention.
Proper treatment remains the issue of some debate. Although oral steroids are routinely prescribed for Bell's Palsy, their benefits are relatively meager. In order to favorably impact on the course, prednisone must be initiated within 72 hours of symptom onset. Anti-viral preparations such as acyclovir and valacyclovir fail to add value to therapy of Bell's Palsy.
