In The Jewish War, Flavius Josephus recounts a horrific episode during the Roman siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE. A starving woman named Mary of Bethezuba, driven mad by famine, killed and roasted her infant son. She ate half of him and offered the remaining portion to rebel fighters who had come to seize her food. The story is presented as a tragic sign of how extreme hunger and internal chaos had reduced the city to unimaginable desperation before its fall to Rome.

Violent night! Unholy night!
All is gone, all is wrong.
Round yon starving mother and child,
Holy infant, weak and defiled.
He cries in hellish screams,
He cries in hellish screams.
Violent night, unholy night,
Mother trembles, gaunt and white.
Milk long dried in hollow breast,
Hunger grants her little rest.
The child grows still in her arms,
The child grows still in her arms.
Violent night, unholy night,
Heaven veils its face from sight.
“Bone of my bone, close thine eyes,
Flesh of my flesh, no more cries.”
He sleeps on an altar of stone,
He sleeps on an altar of stone.
Violent night, unholy night,
Even demons reeled in fright.
High she raised him to their throne,
“Behold” she cried, “my only son,
Feast upon what war has done.
Feast upon what war has done.
