Spring is the best time to propagate your Balloon Flower (Platycodon grandiflorus) plants to get more free plants. Early Fall is the second best time to tackle this job. I love Balloon Flower because it's a perennial in my zone, because of it's color, the fact that it's a great medicinal plant, because it's a pollinator magnet for the bees, it is deer resistant, and it even makes a great cut flower! Although Balloon Flower plants have a large taproot, don't let that intimidate you. As long as each division has a growth point and some roots, you should be fine. Be sure to give ample water to your plants after you divide them. Splitting plants to get more free plants can be a lot of fun!
