Borough: London Borough of Havering
Date filmed: Tuesday the 8th of October 2024
Videos filmed between 12:43 and 13:57
Route: London, Tilbury, and Southend Railway (Tilbury Loop)
Rainham (Essex) (RNM) Station
The railway uses 'Essex' as this was historically in Essex, but now falls under London's Borough of Havering. Needless to mention it now falls in London's Ultra Low Emission Zone, so is further alienated from the county.
Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV)
Filming location: Ferry Lane, Rainham (RM13 9FY)
Another early afternoon at Rainham's unusual pedestrianised level crossing in the far reaches of East London, featuring (as well as the local services) as many as 5 freight trains and a Rail Head Treatment Train! Just like I did on a previous visit to this part of the LTSR (London, Tilbury, and Southend Railway) I visited at this specific part of the day (the early afternoon) as a lot of freight is about on this important line for it - connecting as many as 3 large container ports with the UK's railway network. A few clips from High Speed One (running adjacent and cutting off Ferry Lane) I took when the regional line went quiet are featured as well. I hope you enjoy these videos!
The level crossing here (equipment wise) is vastly un-changed from circa. 1996 bar newer road lights and one newer barrier, and its quiet alarms both sound very unusual in different ways. Since the construction of High Speed One, the road over it has ceased to be a public highway, and the only vehicular users of the crossing are authorised staff heading to a lineside substation on the High-Speed railway (this cannot be accessed any other way, so there is literally no viable alternative to this crossing), and it's otherwise pretty useless for vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists can still use it freely, however. This is a relatively highly-misused level crossing (an example of impatience can be seen in this video), so that must prove a headache for those involved.
