Dry Lake is where we start this hike at 9,500'. The C-47 plane crash is 1,500' above us. From Dry Lake, we took a day hike up to the C-47 and the site of the military plane crash that killed all on board back in 1952. While cruising in marginal weather conditions on a flight from Offutt AFB to March AFB, the airplane hit the slope of Mt San Gorgonio located about 29 miles northeast of March AFB. The wreckage was spotted a few hours later and all 13 occupants had been killed. Four days later, a US Marine Corps Sikorsky crashed in the same area while taking part in the rescue operations, killing two of its three crew members. This was a somber site for sure.

This video covers our hike to the C-47 crash site, our summit of San Gorgonio (for the second time in four weeks), and the descent back to our camp all on Saturday. It also covers our hike down on Sunday via the Southfork Trail. We were so happy to be helped by Mike after misjudging the time and ending up at Lodgepole in the dark!
