Ned rights through the streets of King’s Landing, trying to ignore the cheers coming from the rooftops and streets. Their voices are filled with ecstasy and devotion, nearly drowning out the crackling of fires.
These come from the burning effigies the Queen’s Men had created in celebration of their great victory. All across the city, the victorious troops have gathered symbols of the Seven, the Old Gods, even a few of the Drowned God, and any other symbol that they deem an affront to their god, and all of them are tossed into the fire.
Not everyone is pleased with this, as mixed in with the Queen’s Men, there are also the sounds of wailing from the people. Hundreds of smallfolk watch the sight from behind the line of spears. Some of them stare with tears in their eyes, but others shout curses at him and shake their heads.
Ned grips the reins of his horse, looking over at them and starting to move closer. The Queen’s Men see his banner and open ranks for him to see. He does not arrive completely unimpeded as Lady Melisandre blocks his path and offers a grim smile.
Melisandre: Lord Stark, your presence here is welcome, if not a tad tardy. As you can see, the city is now safe thanks to the followers of the Lord of Light.
Ned: There are certainly no Lannisters here, but I would not use the word safe to describe a place like this. What happened here?
Melisandre: As Renly prepared for an assault, the Lord of Light spoke to me. He urged me to launch a counterattack before their attack could begin. So I did, and R’hallor delivered us victory.
Ned: It does not seem like a counterattack was all you managed to accomplish. They say that King Renly was killed as well, not during the battle, but in the night prior. Do you care to explain that as well? There are some who whisper unnatural magics were used to kill Renly Baratheon.
Melisandre: There is nothing unnatural about the gifts of R’hollar. Tell me, if I had hired a Faceless Man or some common Cat’s Paw to murder him, or poisoned Renly in his sleep, would that have been more palatable, Lord Stark?
Ned: It was treachery. Is this also how you killed Lord Tywin when he tried to march his army back towards the capital?
Melisandre: Did you forget how you first captured this city, Lord Stark? Through your demand for a Trial by Seven? Tell me, why was that acceptable but not this?
Ned: What I did was an act of desperation, one that still risked my head. I didn’t reach into powers beyond my understanding and summon demons to do my bidding.
Melisandre: If you think that these things are beyond my understanding, you are sadly mistaken, Lord Stark. And King Stannis is sure to understand that as well.
Ned: For the sake of the realm, I hope he doesn’t.
Unfortunately for Ned, Stannis does not see it as he has. Instead, the King begins his return to King’s Landing, as with the death of Renly, many in his faction see no reason to continue fighting. The king had no heir, and so there is no one to rally behind.
While Mace urges them to fight on behalf of Margaery Tyrell, that is something few consider. She is a newly made bride, and without children, any future children will have no direct ties to the Iron Throne, allowing even Robert’s bastards to have a better claim than them.
Even the Tyrells’ own bannermen are reluctant to give their overlord more power. Many already believe themselves to be of older and more noble blood due to descending from House Gardner, whereas they are simple stewards.
It becomes clear that they cannot gather as much support as they would like, and Mace must withdraw his forces back into the Reach to consolidate their hold over the region. However, many of the Stormlords decide to abandon their cause and instead bend the knee to Stannis, though Storm’s End remains stubbornly defiant. Mace uses that as a chance to focus his efforts on campaigning east. He sends Randyll Tarly to conquer the surrounding regions and establish a land bridge to the Baratheon castle.
Still, it is a victory for Stannis, and he returns to King’s Landing as its undisputed king. However, he does not receive the warm welcome that others have received. Even compared to his first arrival when he saved Ned from the Trial by Seven, the mood remains somber from the recent actions of the Queen’s Men.
To ease tensions, Stannis announces that any acts of religious violence will not be tolerated and urges both religions to get along. These words were meant to placate the people, but others are bothered by what this means. The Lord of Light shall be
