To become a Chartered Accountant in South Africa you need to study for at least four years, obtaining a BCom in Finance as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting Sciences. (This used to be an honours degree but due to the lack of a thesis it is now just called a diploma. At some universities you can elect to write a thesis so that you can get an honours degree.)

After completing your studies you will then need to complete three years of articles either in an auditing firm (inside of public practice) or in a company that does not primarily provide accounting services (outside of public practice). During those three years you will be monitored and have to achieve certain criteria while studying for and passing two board exams.

You may then apply to SAICA (The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants) for membership and the real work begins. ;)
