Practise/Theory Note, Mika Says:
‘3 variations on classic double-stopping ideas. The first one I like to do completely by finger plucking (middle and ring finger). The second feels natural with hybrid because of the string skip. The third one is using just the middle and ring finger, except in the end pick is used on the notes on the 3rd string. Finger plucking is extremely helpful for achieving a sharp start and end for the double notes. Note how the slides are used to make the parts swing. The chromatic notes are played off-beat, it gives some playfulness to the overall sound. After the double-stops there’s a swinging line. Pull offs will help you get the swinging going. If you try to pick all the notes, you’re indeed doomed! Pay attention to the dynamics. Accenting the first notes of each group will also help you find the swing easier. In the very end it’s all alternate picking in triplets. I tend to (gently) palm mute the notes for such runs. An extra note for keeping the rhythm.....there’s a lot of groovy notes happening off-beat. For keeping my rhythm flowing, I might play some totally muted percussive strokes on strings. I use such percussion hits especially when playing in slower tempos. You will hear an example of this in the slow break down video version where I play with out a metronome.’
