English WHY - s z or iz endings

Listen to him again - he used all seven of the word endings that give us the ‘iz’ sound at the ends of words. That means every word that ends with these letters or letter combinations ends with the sound ‘iz’ - amazes, astonishes, businesses, pieces, watches, fridges, boxes. There are only seven to remember and they work for verbs just as well as nouns - not just plurals.

Arthur the perfect cat gives us our second sound, the ’s’ sound - all words that end with the letter or sound ‘th, p, f, c, or t pronounce the letter ’s’ as an ’s’; so, months, sleeps, books, laughs, chats all pronounce the 's' as a 's' sound.

The last way to pronounce the letter ’s’ is with the ‘z’ sound - and this includes the sounds b, d, g, l, m, n, ng, r, v, w and y. So verbs, awards, bags, walls, aims, contains, sings, colours, adjectives, swallows, and always. You can see these words on the behind me. NOTES:
words ending with vowel sounds a i o or u are rare in spoken english, but watch out for the very common words ‘is’ and ‘as’ with the ‘z’ sound, and ‘this’ with the ’s’ sound.
Common words in conversation that end with ‘es’ usually take the rule from the letter before the e - for examples ‘makes’ pronounces the ’s’ sound because of the ‘k’.
And watch out for the ‘c’ letter which is sometimes pronounced as an ’s’ in, for example, ‘spaces’, ‘places’, ‘faces’, ‘dances’, ‘notices’, ‘offices’ ’races’ - and so ends with the ‘iz’ sound (like ‘ss’ and ’s’)
