As Ghana marks 69 years of independence, the national conversation shifts from celebration to reflection on the country’s development journey since Ghanaian Independence. Analysts, historians, and thought leaders weigh in on whether the anniversary should be more about festivities or a sober assessment of where the nation stands.
Henry Godson Afful argues that Ghana needs a clear and disciplined development plan, stressing that leadership must also recognise when it is time to step aside. He also describes the 1979 Ghana coup d'état as an unnecessary intervention, warning that corruption has real human costs, noting that every stolen public fund indirectly harms lives.
Historian Kwaku Darko Ankrah says the cycle of military coups slowed Ghana’s developmental progress, while political analyst John Osae-Kwapong observes that although Ghanaians have largely embraced democracy, many are still struggling with how the democratic system functions in practice.
Meanwhile, Stephen Asamoah-Boateng reflects on the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah during the 1966 Ghana coup d'état, suggesting that internal political tensions within Nkrumah’s circle also contributed to his fall.
