Everybody says you should progress through the grits properly when sharpening.
So I wanted to test what actually happens if you do something much more extreme: go straight from 220 grit to 3000 grit.
In this video, I test that jump first on a Spyderco Dragonfly in VG-10, then check the result again on a Spyderco Delica in SPY27 to see whether the same pattern shows up twice.
The idea was simple:
first test a brutal 220 → 3000 → strop progression
then compare that to a fuller 220 → 600 → 1000 → 3000 → strop progression
document the edge and scratch pattern under the microscope
see whether the big jump is actually viable
What I found was interesting:
the big jump works better than many people would expect, but the full progression still gives a cleaner, more uniform finish.
That said, there is an important limitation here: VG-10 and SPY27 are relatively forgiving steels.
That does not automatically mean the same thing would happen with more wear-resistant steels like 20CV, S90V, and similar steels.
So the real question becomes:
can you skip the middle grits… and are you actually saving time if you do?
Let me know where you stop for a working edge:
220 / 600 / 1000 / 3000 / higher
