A Tory analysis claims more prisoners have been recalled to jail than released early since Labour took office in July 2024. It says there have been 54,354 recalls for breaching licence rules or reoffending, compared with 48,932 early releases under Labour’s SDS40 scheme (release after 40% of a sentence).
The Ministry of Justice says the comparison is misleading because recall figures can include the same person multiple times and people released years earlier, while SDS40 counts first-time releases.
Labour is also planning further sentencing changes to ease overcrowding, including shorter prison terms and wider use of electronic tags.
