PROFINET IO is a real-time protocol based on Ethernet. It is used as a high-capacity network for industrial automation applications. The PROFINET IO protocol facilitates the exchange of data with a programmable logic controller (PLC). A PROFINET IO network consists of the following devices:
IO Controller: Usually the PLC, which manages the overall application.
IO Device: A decentralized IO device (e.g., an encoder or a sensor) controlled by the IO Controller.
IO Supervisor: An HMI (Human-Machine Interface) or PC used for diagnostics or commissioning purposes.
Real-Time Communication Modes
PROFINET provides two types of real-time communication:
PROFINET IO RT (Real-Time):
Real-time data is transmitted via a prioritized Ethernet frame.
No specific hardware is required.
Cycle times as low as 4 ms can be achieved due to frame prioritization.
PROFINET IO IRT (Isochronous Real-Time):
Designed for applications with stricter timing requirements.
Achieves cycle times of up to 2 ms.
Requires specific hardware for switches and IO devices.
Non-Real-Time Communication
All diagnostic and configuration data is transmitted through a non-real-time (NRT) channel using a standard TCP/IP protocol. However, no guaranteed delay can be provided, and typical cycle times can exceed 100 ms.
