"Your 4-wheel drive system allows you the option of selecting among four drive modes based on road conditions. This 4-wheel drive shift switch electronically controls operation of the transfer case. Rotate the switch to shift between each mode: 2-wheel drive, AUTO, 4HI and 4LO.
2-wheel drive is for normal driving conditions, typically for dry, paved roads. When the switch is in the AUTO position, the distribution of torque changes
automatically according to road conditions, resulting in improved driving stability.
The AUTO position should be used when driving on paved or slippery roads.
In 4-wheel drive, 4 HI provides greater traction for rocky, snowy, muddy and sandy roads. 4 HI can be used up to, but no higher than, 62 miles per hour.
4LO provides maximum power and traction for situations such as driving on steep grades; or on rocky, sandy or muddy roads. The maximum safe speed in 4LO is 31 miles per hour.
If conditions call for it, you can shift into 4 HI while driving -- at no more than 62 miles an hour. However, to shift into or out of 4LO, your vehicle must be at a standstill. After stopping, you must move the shift lever to the NEUTRAL position and push this switch IN when changing into or out of 4LO.
This is the 4-Wheel Drive shift indicator light. When the engine is running, it will illuminate to show the drive mode you have selected.
To avoid causing damage to your 4-wheel drive system, never shift between 4LO and 4 HI while driving. Also, do not drive on dry, hard surface roads in 4H or 4LO, as it will cause unnecessary noise, excessive tire wear and increased fuel consumption.
Please see your Owner’s Manual for important safety information, system limitations and additional operating information.
