The town has its own local currency called the Ora, a high level of economic self-sufficiency, and many residents say the community experiences very low crime compared to other parts of South Africa.

Some people even claim the town essentially runs itself, with limited reliance on outside government institutions. Others point to the unusual fact that the community has very little visible policing, raising questions about how order is maintained.
