In this video I consider whether Germany could have defeated in the Soviet Union following the failure of Operation Barbarossa in late 1941. To answer this question, I develop a novel computational model of the Eastern Front, involving estimation of force strengths, losses, and advance rates based on historical data. I use this model to analyse several historical counterfactuals, including what would have happened if Germany had avoided the disaster at Stalingrad, if the Allies had delayed opening a second front or even been absent entirely, if the D-Day landings had failed, and if Germany had better prepared for a long campaign in the east. I argue that the key factors contributing to German defeat were the disaster at Stalingrad, the increasing pressure from the Western Allies, and the failure of Germany to make sufficient preparations for a war of attrition.
