Glenveagh Castle, located in the beautiful Glenveagh National Park, has a rich and fascinating history. It was built in the late 19th century by Captain John George Adair, an ambitious landowner from County Laois. The castle was constructed between 1867 and 1873, nestled within the Derryveagh Mountains overlooking Lough Veagh.
Captain Adair was known for transforming the once desolate Glenveagh Estate into a thriving agricultural enterprise. However, his ownership of the land was not without controversy, as many locals were evicted during the process. In 1929, the castle and the surrounding lands were sold to an American art collector, Arthur Kingsley Porter.
The castle was thereafter owned by Henry Plumer McIlhenny until it was ultimately acquired by the Irish government in 1983. Since then, Glenveagh Castle has been beautifully restored and opened to the public, allowing visitors to explore its historical rooms, stunning gardens, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Today, Glenveagh Castle stands as a testament to the resilience and history of the area. It serves as a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all around the world who come to appreciate its architectural marvels and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Glenveagh National Park.
