Satellite industry has gone through a major shift in the last decade with the launch of small satellites in large numbers. Traditionally, small satellites were almost completely dominated by educational and research institutions and earth imaging startups providing high resolution imagery at a reasonable costs as compared to traditional players. But the demonstration of nano-satellites in making voice calls have proved the viability of small satellites for commercial applications other than earth imaging. There is a larger trend of major aerospace industries moving into this small satellite market making this segment reach a point of criticality. About 2,400 small satellites are estimated to be launched in the next five years. Several issues including small satellites armies as potential weapons in space based warfare are gaining traction. These do call for debates on the potential of small satellites for commercial applications, challenges faced by the private players and the risk involved with satellites swarms.
Can small satellites emerge as an effective platform replacing the larger constellations? What are the drivers for the emergence of small satellite constellations globally?
