Naw Pa and Saw Pa, father and daughter, perform deep in the countryside of Eastern Burma. It was one of the first days of our motorcycle journey and we'd stayed at a monastery the night before (staying with civilians is still illegal in the new Burma). A friend led us to a nearby village where we heard this song, one of the sweetest I've had the privilege of listening to while producing Raw Music International.

Burma has so many different language groups and regional dialects that even our friend Tun, who speaks Sgaw Karen, couldn't fully translate the lyrics. This is the best we could do:

The Karen love our language
It reappears at Kaw Taw city
Like the early morning sun , bringing light to the shadows
From mother to child, generation to generation,
Our master (God) rediscovered it
And spread the Karen language far and wide
Our ancient language appears to shine in the soft air
