David Dow had a massive stroke at age 10 destroying nearly 2/3 of the left brain. He was left with global aphasia.

School issues were incredibly difficult for David as he could not speak, read, or write. Aphasia is an invisible disability that affects language - not intellect.

Here, David and his mom Carol Dow-Richards, Director of the nonprofit organization The Aphasia Recovery Connection, share tips for school staff to learn more about aphasia and how they can best support students with this diagnosis. These tips are also good for tutors, caregivers, or those working with or for people with aphasia.
