Abridged script of video:
Dave from Bishopville, South Carolina sent me some recordings he'd made of his improvising over a 12-bar in E using the E blues scales.
Listening to his playing I was impressed by how well he had learned the blues scale positions and how fluently he was able to move from one to another, using notes from the scales to create phrases that went nicely with the chords.
Dave was effectively asking me 'what next?' And, for me his request highlights a particular stage of development that many guitar players find themselves needing a bit of help with, so I thought I would use it as the subject for this video.
Once you have your scales well drilled and are able to create phrases over chord changes, then the next step is to add colour to your playing by using a combination of techniques to turn phrases into licks.
Let's look at a simple phrase from the fifth position the next step is to turn it into something more like this
And all I am doing there is taking the same bunch of notes from the scale and finding a way to knit them together into a lick by adding a bit of technique - in this case a slide... a hammer-on and a pull-off slowed down you can see the detail better...
So that, in essence is the next part of the process. The overall result of this approach is to move away from this...where I am playing a high percentage of notes straight from the scale with little embellishment... towards this ...where I am cramming in the technique and adding rhythmic and dynamic variation to my phrases.
On the SGT site you'll find a number of lessons that go over this process of lick formation in great detail, so if you feel at all bogged down in making the transition from knowing your scales to being able to create great-sounding blues licks then get in touch with me and I'll send you links to some of the lessons that will help get you flying.
And Dave, many thanks for taking the trouble to send me your recordings and I hope this little lesson will help point the way for the next stage of your lead guitar journey.
